Meaningful symbols are a beautiful part of headstones

The lettering inscribed on headstones is only one part of the overall design. Many people also opt for images and graphics, as they can mark the final resting place of someone in an appropriate way. Symbols are a popular choice for headstones but people are often unsure of what they represent. Here are a few commonly used symbols and their attached meanings.

A book is often used to represent the Bible and can be perfect for those that had strong faith. Alternatively, a book can also be used to reflect the knowledge of the deceased, perhaps if they were teachers or simply enjoyed the pursuit of knowledge or had a great love of reading.

An anchor symbolises hope and eternal life. For many years it was used by Masons to denote well-grounded hope and is popular amongst nautical lovers and is often found on the monuments of sailors.

Birds are usually a symbol of peace. The Egyptians used birds in flight as a representation of the winged soul. An alternative option is to use wings alone.

A butterfly can be used to represent rebirth or resurrection. It can also be used as a reminder of the natural cycle of life and death and is widely used on the headstones of children.

The symbol of the Celtic Cross was revived in the mid-19th century and has endured as a popular choice for gravestone inscription ever since. It simply combines a cross with a ring surrounding the intersection.

The circle is an ancient symbol of eternity. As it has no beginning or end it is seen by many to symbolise resurrection.

Clasped hands can be seen on many gravestones. The hands are typically male and female and could represent a parting or unity in life as well as death. The hands are often used for the side by side burial of couples and family members.

The dragonfly is a symbol of lightness, change and joy as well as a connection with the spirits of nature. It symbolises departed souls in several Native American traditions.

These are just a few of the many symbols that are often used in gravestone design. There are of course no right or wrong ways to inscribe the memorial of a loved one, all that matters is that you feel you have paid appropriate personal tribute.

We have a talented and experienced design team that will ensure your memorial is elegantly inscribed with the words and symbol of your choice. We provide compassionate, affordable and friendly services and we are the largest supplier of memorial products, grave ornaments and adults and childrens headstones in the UK.
